1986 saw the high point of Cold War tensions and nuclear warhead production.  By June 1st of that year world nuclear stockpiles had grown to over 70,000 warheads.  With each one being orders of magnitude more powerful than the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs, nuclear submarines patrolled the oceans with enough fire power to completely destroy any country.
